Virtual Dance Instruction: Community Hubs

The concept of teaching virtual dance courses may seem as counterintuitive as putting a square peg into a circle hole. Typically, essential means for delivering learning outcomes in the arts are in-person interaction and collaboration, hands-on experimentation, materials and equipment practices, specific space requirements, and live event components. Without these means, faculty are challenged not only with how to teach virtually but with how to redefine courses with very little of those tools that initially have defined the discipline.
In response, I created an online hub for my students in the spring with the intention to create a familiar sense of community where they could go, discover, and grow through dance in addition to communicate in forums and live chats, express themselves artistically, and be inspired by other students and artists.
This presentation will introduce this hub, systematically present curriculum practices, identify tools that proved to be useful, and consider some of the student feedback in response to the experience.

Cynthia DuFault
Assistant Professor in Dance, State University of New York, Potsdam
Cynthia DuFault (BFA/MFA in dance – choreography/performance, Arizona State University) has amassed a number of credentials as dancer, choreographer, and educator, expanding in a range of mediums including concert dance, musical theatre, commercial dance, and film. She was a Nevada Art Council/National Endowment for the Arts 2017 Performing Artist Fellowship recipient. She participated in the 2019 SUNY Potsdam TEDx: Creativity and Technology as a presenter for Technology on Stage and as the Creative Process and was part of the selection panel for the 2020 SUNY Potsdam TEDx: Identities. Cynthia’s prominent teaching credentials include New World School of the Arts in Miami, Perry Mansfield Performing Arts School in Colorado, Universidad de Guanajuato in Mexico, University of Northern Colorado, Indiana University, the College of Southern Nevada, and currently State University of New York, Potsdam.
