Online Faculty and Student Mentoring: Building Community and Enhancing Support

Session Overview

This video was part of the June 2022 REMOTE: The Connected Faculty Summit

This session will provide an overview of mentoring for faculty and students in online education programs, or for those considering a more traditional mentoring program that might be delivered predominantly online. The presenters will review the various types of faculty and student mentoring programs in higher education, along with relevant research-based best practices for effective and successful implementation, including real-life examples. The session will highlight the ‘why’ of mentoring, characteristics of effective mentors and mentees, different structures, or organizations for mentoring, as well as core elements for setting up and running online mentoring programs. This presentation is largely based on the presenters’ forthcoming book “Best Practices for Mentoring in Online Programs: Supporting Faculty and Students in Higher Education (2022)” as part of the Best Practices in Online Teaching and Learning series for Routledge.
