In this episode of Course Stories, we delve into emotional intelligence and the psychology of academic success, two unique courses aimed at dismantling a deficit view of emotions and equipping students with strategies that enable their academic success. Narin Loa, Instructional Designer Associate at EdPlus, sits down with Dr. Laura Petrolle Clemons, Assistant Teaching Professor and the Professional Field Experience Coordinator with the Arizona State University psychology digital immersion programs, and Dr. Natalie Fabert, Assistant Teaching Professor of ASU’s School of Social and Behavioral Sciences, to discuss the development of their respective courses–PSY 338: Emotional Intelligence & PSY 394: The Psychology of Academic Success, now known as PSY 340: The Psychology of Academic Motivation and Growth.
Laura Petrolle Clemons, Ph.D., is an assistant teaching professor and the professional field experience coordinator with the Arizona State University psychology digital immersion programs. Laura has constructed a variety of courses for ASU and most recently developed and launched her second course in Emotional Intelligence for the University: The Positive Psychology of Emotional Intelligence. She is also the co-creator and co-host for SunDevil Psych Online, a podcast dedicated to creating space, awareness, community, inclusivity, and belonging for our psych community here at ASU and beyond.
Natalie Fabert, Ph.D., is an assistant teaching professor (lecturer) of ASU’s School of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Fabert teaches undergraduate and graduate online psychology courses related to social psychology, clinical psychology, professional issues, learning and motivation, and addiction. Dr. Fabert is also creating a course on the psychology of high control groups (cults) that will be offered for the first time during summer of 2023. Dr. Fabert is a licensed psychologist and maintains a part-time private therapy practice. She is also co-creator and co-host of “Sun Devil Psych- The Pod.”
Narin Loa is an associate instructional designer with Instructional Design and New Media (IDNM) at EdPlus. In his present role, he supports instructional designers and faculty in the design and development of ASU online courses. Narin has more than 12 years of instructional experience and curriculum development in various higher education settings. He holds a master’s in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MTESOL), and is currently a doctoral candidate in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics at ASU.
