Creating weekly overview videos is beneficial for your course in several ways. The largest benefit of creating these overviews is instructor presence. Creating instructor presence is crucial to online courses as having a strong instructor presence and community within a course can yield higher student engagement. Weekly overview videos are also a great opportunity to provide some context to the content students will be going over in the next week, discuss themes and concepts students should be thinking of as they go through the learning materials, and connect these concepts to current events. Weekly overviews can also be a great place to discuss the upcoming workload and set expectations for what students will be doing and clarify challenging assignments.
The short video below and accompanying handout will go over the following:
- Why you should record a course introduction
- What a course introduction should include
- Best practices when recording
This article, video and handout would not be possible without the talents of Elizabeth Lee, Andrew Bautista, Frank Cordova and Ron Carranza.
