In this episode, Ricardo Leon interviews Emily Zarka, PH.D., the monster expert of ASU and host of the popular PBS show, Monstrum. 

Emily is an adjunct instructor for ASU Online and teaches a variety of courses that were developed prior to her involvement. As such, she has some unique and impactful suggestions for how to personalize courses when the content is standard and prepared ahead of time. She also shares her perspective on branding your teaching and approach within your discipline. We hope you enjoy the episode and take some time to become familiar with Monstrum!

Emily Zarka


Emily Zarka holds a Ph. D. in British Romantic Literature with an emphasis on the Gothic. She is ASU’s official “monster expert.” Her research explores the roles of desire and knowledge dissemination in portrayals of undead characters produced during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Zarka has taught literature, film and media, and writing classes at Arizona State University. She writes and hosts a show called Monstrum for PBS Digital Studios.

Aguila

Jeff Aguila


Jeff Aguila is a media specialist at our Tempe Campus Studios. Jeff, the episode editor, has been with the Instructional Design and New Media team for just about a year. He is an ASU Alumnus with a degree in Journalism and Mass Communication. Before coming back to work at ASU, Jeff spent 15 years as a photojournalist in TV news.
